Tornado Martini Shaker This project focused on applying a visual metaphor to a kitchen accessory to create a unique, appealing, and functional object. The first concept was a bottle opener that was inspired by a squid, and was labeled the Kraken. The sharp angles on the bottle opener section look like the squids head, and the twisted corkscrew section looks eerily like tentacles.
The second concept was another corkscrew that was inspired by the scarab beetle. The body would be made of two highly styled rubber wings that opened up to become handles, and the head would be smooth metal that would twist.
The third concept was a martini shaker that is inspired by a stylized tornado. The rubber over molded strips help to add grip to what would otherwise be a slippery object. This was the idea that I chose to develop further.
The styling was revised, and all of the dimensions were finalized in order to make an appearance model. The model is made out of a turned piece of bass wood which is covered with strips of automotive clay. The wood is painted silver to look like stainless steel, and the clay is painted flat black to resemble rubber. The model was built in three pieces. The main body, the strainer, and the lid. These can be combined in different configurations for different photographic purposes.
